The town of Blyth is situated on the North East coast in Northumberland. In this DVD we take a journey through time and see how it was many years ago. The age of steam is remembered and the railway stations along with the last passenger train to leave Blyth in 1964, as we say farewell to steam. Witness first hand the port and how busy it once was. We have the fishing vessels and fisher lasses that travelled the coast and this footage dates from around 1912. We also see deliveries of goods and how they were despatched from the ships. Ship building was another prominent employment in Blyth and we have footage of the launch of the Corchester that was built at Blyth to carry coal. Blyth not only built ships, but broke them up too and we go to Hughes Bolckows the breakers. The Empress of Scotland was a disaster as it caught fire at Blyth on its way to the breakers yard. Witness the ship burning and all attempts that were made to put it out over four days. The coal industry is also represented as we go back in time and see how the coal mines in Blyth operated with early archive footage. Also we have Vesting Day, when the coal mines were Nationalised and the machinery that was used over the years to extract the coal. Travel along the River Blyth in 1963 and witness how busy it was with huge shipping entering Blyth. There is also the High Ferry travelling from Blyth to Cambois. The Kitty Brewster Bridge and early traffic with various types of vehicles to be seen. The Second World War saw Blyth bombed on numerous occasions and the Dig for Victory campaign is also remembered. The RNLI is an important organisation and we step back to 1963 when the Adelfotis 2 went aground at the entrance to the River Tyne. The coast guard asked for assistance from various emergency services from along the coast and a huge operation to save lives began on the terrible January night. There is so much for you to take in we know you will enjoy this Journey Through Time and see how Blyth has changed over the years Total running time approx 50 minutes. Copyright Six-T Media…… 2011
