Join them as they as they fish on the River Wansbeck and having a kick around with some of the local lads. Meet their parents, and witness them at the table for an evening meal and enjoying other activities. There is also footage of the world famous Ashington Group of Pitmen Painters from 1977. Watch them at work creating their masterpieces. See then relaxing in their hut before leaving for home. Growing leeks was a common feature in coal mining communities and there is footage from the 1950s. An underground fire threatened the closure of Lynemouth Colliery in 1966. Witness the efforts to distinguish it by pumping water down the shaft. That wasn't the only problem that faced them at this time as there were between 60 and 70 pit ponies underground facing a grim death from the water levels rising but also poisonous gas. They were eventually saved by miners who risked their lives for these life threatened animals. Take a trip down Ellington Colliery and see for yourself how it was as they travel to the coal face. Witness miners working awesome machinery as they extract the coal. Go underground Ashington Colliery and there is footage of a Duckbill Loader at work. Yes the miner was certainly a skilled worker. At Newbiggin-by-the-Sea you can witness Lifeboat Day from 1959. Witness a snapshot in time as you see how it was and also the lifeboat. There is a little more footage too from this lovely village.
