The growth of the coal mining industry transformed the landscape of the County of Durham with villages appearing everywhere. There was a large influx of men and their families from around the country flocking to Durham for work in the mines seeking a new life. This brings us to this film, the second part in our Colliery Villages of Durham series. In this we visit Horden, Haswell, Houghton-le-spring and South Hetton. There is so much to offer on this film including collieries, housing, shops, pubs, the streets, transport, poverty and more. We go underground with early scenes of coal mining. This was certainly hard graft in those days. No machines like in the modern times. Pick and shovel and our old friend the pit pony is on view too. We have the pit banners, the Durham Miners’ Gala, carnival days and what great days these were with villagers dressing up for the big day to enjoy themselves with their families. Days long gone since the demise of the collieries. We have leisure time too with bowling, cricket, football, whippet and pigeon racing and much more as we delve back in time. Great days indeed and days that should not be forgotten. You never know you may see yourself, a family member or a friend as we revisit these days long gone. Villagers certainly knew how to entertain in those days and we have many great scenes including the Haswell Aged Miners Choir. The winter of 1941 is on view too. What a winter this was when snow fell on the whole country. Durham was hit hard with snow of over six feet deep in places and snow drifts everywhere. We have used some of the rarest archive footage there is for you on this film and accompanied with still photographs it makes a fantastic journey for everyone as we visit the Collieries of Durham for the second time. As we said before you never know who you may recognise in this as we delve back in time to witness days long gone.  Total running time approximately 60 minutes
