Newbiggin, also being referred to by its full name of Newbiggin by the Sea, has a long and varied history dating back over a thousand years. It is situated in Northumberland on the North-east coast.
Fishing has always been associated with Newbiggin and it is with this tropic that we take this nostalgic journey during the early days. We witness the lifeboats and rescues which include the Eminent which hit difficulties near Newbiggin in 1940, all eleven crew were saved from a watery grave by the brave crew of the “Augustus and Laura” We can’t forget the role that was played by the women of Newbiggin and others as it was they who helped haul the lifeboat to the shore for the rescue to begin.
We also have lifeboat training with mock rescues from the 1940’s and 50’s. which include the “Augustus and Laura” and the “Richard Ashley. Witness first hand the men and women of Newbiggin baiting the lines, and a coble at sea with its crew fishing. We have the sale of fish by auction on the beach too.
The fisherlasses with their wicker creels are on view as are the fisherlasses involved in the herring industry. We have many fisherman and their families from years long gone on view too and much more.
